Stereolabs has released a major firmware and SDK update for the ZED and ZED Mini cameras, bringing multi-camera support on Windows and Linux, plus new plane detection capabilities.
Multi-Camera Support
The update enables simultaneous use of multiple ZED cameras on a single host system. This is essential for:
- 360-degree perception in robotics and autonomous vehicles
- Multi-view 3D capture for volumetric video
- Surveillance and monitoring with overlapping coverage
- Hand-eye calibration with dedicated wrist and head cameras
Plane Detection
The new plane detection module identifies flat surfaces (floors, walls, tables) in the 3D environment and returns their geometric parameters:
- Plane equation (normal vector and distance from origin)
- Boundary polygon of the detected plane
- Confidence score for detection reliability
This feature simplifies common robotics tasks like table-top object detection, navigable surface identification, and AR content placement.
Firmware Improvements
Depth accuracy in outdoor settings has improved by approximately 15% compared to the previous firmware version. The update also brings improved depth quality in challenging conditions like direct sunlight and low-texture environments.
