Overview
The Basler blaze-101 is a professional Time-of-Flight (ToF) 3D camera designed for demanding industrial applications. Built around the Sony DepthSense IMX556 sensor and featuring four 940nm VCSEL laser diodes, it delivers millimeter-accurate 3D data with exceptional reliability in factory and warehouse environments.
Key Features
- Sony DepthSense IMX556: Purpose-built ToF sensor with VGA resolution at 30 FPS
- 4× VCSEL Lasers: 940nm illumination provides sunlight robustness up to 12.8 W/m² irradiance
- IP67 Industrial Housing: Fully sealed against dust and water immersion
- GigE Vision Interface: Standard industrial protocol with PTP IEEE1588 synchronization
- M12 Connectors: Locking industrial connectors for reliable data and power
- Multi-Output: Simultaneously provides point cloud, range map, intensity image, and confidence map
Performance Analysis
The blaze-101 operates from 0.3m to 10m with a typical accuracy of ±5mm within the 0.5-5.5m range. The temporal noise stays below 1mm, ensuring smooth, stable depth measurements. The 67°×51° FOV covers a practical working area for most industrial inspection tasks.
What truly distinguishes the blaze-101 is its environmental robustness. The 940nm wavelength combined with high-power VCSEL illumination allows it to operate in direct sunlight, while the IP67 housing handles dust, water spray, and even temporary immersion. The camera is rated for 0°C to 50°C operation with vibration and shock resistance per industrial standards.
Use Cases
Logistics & Warehousing: Pallet dimensioning, box volume measurement, and automated sorting with consistent accuracy regardless of object color or texture.
Manufacturing: Robot guidance for bin picking, assembly verification, and quality inspection on fast-moving production lines.
AGV/AMR Navigation: Obstacle detection and pallet pocket identification for automated forklifts.
Outdoor Automation: Construction site monitoring, agricultural vehicle guidance, and port logistics.
Comparison
Compared to the IFM O3D303 (also reviewed on this site), the blaze-101 offers similar industrial ToF capabilities but with a broader ecosystem via GigE Vision and pylon SDK. The IFM O3D303 provides slightly better FOV at the cost of a more proprietary interface. Against consumer-grade ToF cameras like the Azure Kinect DK (now discontinued), the blaze-101 sacrifices resolution for industrial reliability and environmental protection that consumer cameras simply cannot match.
