RealSense Spins Off from Intel as Independent Company with $50M Funding

July 2025 — RealSense, the 3D depth-sensing pioneer long associated with Intel, has officially spun off as an independent company after 14 years under the tech giant’s umbrella. The move comes with $50 million in Series A funding led by Intel Capital and the MediaTek Innovation Fund, marking a bold new chapter for the robotics vision leader.

A New Era of Independence

RealSense CEO Nadav Orbach, who spent over 19 years at Intel including 15 focused on vision and imaging, now leads a team of 130 employees — 115 of whom transferred from Intel. Every employee who made the transition received stock options in the new company.

“We’re 130 founders now,” said Orbach. “We see ourselves as a startup in the physical AI space — nimble, focused, and building the tools robots need to understand the world.”

RealSense’s depth-sensing technology already powers thousands of robots worldwide, including autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), robotic arms, and an increasing number of humanoid robots. The company claims its cameras are embedded in 60% of AMR and humanoid developers’ systems, working with companies such as Geek+ and Agility Robotics.

Doubling Down on Vision Software

Beyond its core camera hardware, RealSense is significantly expanding its software capabilities. Key investment areas include:

• Visual SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) — critical for AMR navigation
• 3D Safety — helping robots detect and avoid hazards in real-time
• Edge AI Processing — pushing intelligence directly onto cameras

“We want to be more than just the eyes of a robot,” Orbach stated. “We want to be a robot’s visual cortex — interpreting, localizing, and acting in real-time.”

The D555: Next-Generation Depth Camera

RealSense recently launched the D555, a Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) depth camera featuring the next-generation RealSense Vision SoC V5. The D555 delivers 5 TOPS of on-board AI compute, unlocking new APIs and software features including real-time telemetry, edge processing, and customizable vision pipelines.

With over 3,000 customers and 80+ global patents, RealSense is positioning itself at the forefront of the physical AI revolution — where robots and intelligent systems increasingly need to understand and navigate the three-dimensional world.
